I have often watched eagles circling in the sky and marveled at the effortlessness and beauty of it. The thermal updrafts keep them gliding silently for hours. I have dreamed of being able to fly this way. The power to do this is not within the eagle but the sun warming the earth creating air currents. The flyer just has to spread his wings and follow the updrafts.
The Old Testament prophet, Isaiah, explains a joyful flight available to those who trust in God, that would make the eagles envious. Human weaknesses and infirmities will give way completely to new strength and exultant soaring. "those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles"
I have chosen a man and woman to demonstrate this truth as the inspiration for the sculpture springs partly from another passage as well: "A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back to back and conquer."
The arms of the man and woman are intertwined over and under for a reason. There are times in the life of every marriage partnership when each of them are called on to lift up and encourage the other in times of need.
