Born in Jinan, Shandong Province in the People's Republic of China, Portland artist Jiao Ying received a fine arts degree from Shandong Teachers University. During the time she was at the university, Ying studied with three internationally recognized scholars in the traditional Eastern methods of painting. Ying emigrated to the United States in 1991 and started her own school of Chinese Culture and art. The artwork shown is a gouache painted on both sides of delicate rice paper. Although this style of painting is ritual in China, Ying's contemporary still life, floral, and landscapes with exotic birds and figurative features use light and color similar to the more modern impressionists. The lush colors and images are sensuous and soft to enchant the eye and stimulate the imagination.
